published: Tuesday | November 25, 2008

Simone Forbes, captain of the winning team.

Waulgrovians 'A' topped the Jamaica National Building Society/Jo Wigman rally competition, following an exciting 8-7 victory over defending champions Jamalco at the Leila Robinson Courts on Saturday.

The rally competition signals the start of the Open League competition, which will begin this Saturday at the same venue. The Jamaica Defence Force won the dress parade ahead of Bridgeport and Alexander Strikers.

Waulgrovians 'A' booked their spot in the final by thrashing Bridgeport 11-3 in the first semi-final while Jamalco whipped Ravens 10-2 in the other semi-final.

Team's performance

National player Christina Solmon top-scored for Waulgro-vians 'A' with five goals and was supported by captain Simone Forbes with three goals.

Forbes, who is also the captain of the Jamaica's senior team, said she was pleased with her team's performance.

"I am extremely happy," said Forbes. "I thought we did a very good job in all areas on the court and this was a complete team effort by all our players." Forbes added that they have now set their sights on winning this year's Open League title.

"I think we have a very good chance of winning this league because we have a very balanced team at all areas of the court," said Forbes. National players Paula Thompson, Althea Byfield and Solmon are a few of the new additions to the Waulgrovians team.

Nadine Bryan, national representative and captain of Jamalco said: "We are not disappointed with the loss because I don't think this will affect our chances of winning the league."
