Death penalty as deterrent
published: Tuesday | November 25, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Of numerous studies showing the deterrent effect in various locales, most will show that a single execution will prevent from four to 18 murders; of course, there are others that show otherwise. Most of these have no scientific basis.

If you concentrate mostly on the studies that use accepted scientific research methods, you will find that the death penalty when carried out consistently does have very strong deterrent effect. If you have further doubts, check China where it is used to very good effect.

Having said that, I wish to state that my personal view is that the death penalty was and is intended to be the ultimate punishment for the ultimate crime. Any deterrent effect, in my view, will clearly enhance its effectiveness

I am, etc.,

GEORGE GORDON
