NOTE-WORTHY

Shameful fruits

I now live in Atlanta, Georgia, and for all the time I have been living in and observing the political carryings-on, I have never liked Peter Phillips, but I must support his position on hanging as reported in The Gleaner of November 19.

I fail to imagine how MPs, who profess to be protecting our citizens, will be jumping on the bandwagon of emotional euphoria by implementing the irreversible act of hanging when now more than ever, the ineptitude and corruption of the state machinery to bring criminals to justice has been unveiling some troubling signs.

The irony is, the criminal activities we see manifesting today were incubated, nourished, and financed by some of the very same people who are trying to use legislation to eradicate the shameful fruits of their labour.

- Lloyd Gillies, Atlanta, GA

Fix justice system

I have no problem with capital punishment, but before the Government of Jamaica should conclude re-implementing such measure, they first need to re-examine the justice system, because I see where a lot of innocent people are going to prison now. If they don't correct the justice system, I'm sure they'll be hanging a lot of innocent people too.

I'll give the recent example where a policeman confessed to fabricating a story about a young man that he claimed had committed murder. Now, what if capital punishment was in place?

Justice clean-up

I think they should hang them only if the justice system is cleaned up. Too often, we have innocent peoole who are sent to prison and stay for a long time. It would be horrible if such a person were to lose his or her life because someone simply thought that he or she deserves to die for something that person belive he or she did. Hang them and hang them high ... but make sure you have the right person.

Looking for Dodd family

I would like to get in touch with the descendents of my grandfather George Saville Dodd, (the son of John Hugh Dodd (born Kingston, about 1850) and Sara Johnstone, who lived in Port Antonio).

I was born and raised in Brazil, and am the daughter of Edward Hemming Dodd.
