The Editor, Sir:The Spanish Town Citizens Against Violence believes strongly that Jamaica is under assault. Assault on many fronts - murder, robberies, and a host of other negative things - but Jamaica is a beautiful country and we must continue to hope. It is, also, our belief that there must be a strong interaction between the police and citizens, we must work together to end this madness of murder of our children.
The police cannot solve crimes alone. That would be impossible. Each citizen must decide to take a proactive position and do something, find out how to make a difference in ending this. We are seeing a sad day, with mutilation of the bodies of children taking place, and their small bodies are left in open fields. It is one thing to come out and denounce it, but, what next? On Friday, we initiated a campaign in Spanish Town called 'Child Alert', built on the campaign used abroad.
We have had support from the most unlikely sources - a bumper sticker which will be placed on cars, doors, shops and houses and will be distributed free of cost to the Spanish Town public. It will read: "Child Alert - we are watching you", and indeed, we will be. We ask each of you to watch with us. We will be having meetings surrounding this as soon as the bumper stickers are available and hope that you will join us in carrying the message.
People who rob and murder are cowards. Let's all do something, let's get involved. Jamaica is bigger than all its spoilers. We can all end this madness.
I am, etc.,
