This strapless creation by Keneea Linton could be the perfect cute black dress that can be worn to a cocktail reception. For a complete look, matching body accessories are added with a black and white headpiece by Dahlia's collection.

It rained for the most part of the day but it seems the heavens were in favour of what was to happen at the poolside of the Hilton hotel last Tuesday evening. Just minutes before the start of what was termed a pioneer event in the local fashion industry, the rain, which had organisers on edge, ceased.

The launch of the fashion event was hosted in collaboration with the Hilton hotel and the Jamaica Fashion and Apparel Cluster. Dubbed 'Island Couture: Celebrating Jamaican Fashion', local designs were the talk of the night. And out for the night to witness this were designers, industry stakeholders, fashion enthusiasts and curiosity seekers.

With musical entertainment by Kai Wakeling and the hotel's resident band, guests mingled during the cocktail reception in anticipation of the fashion show. During this time, some guests took the opportunity to peruse some of the creative pieces by Rêve Jewellery on display as well as some of the local clothing designs which were being exhibited. These were shown by models who doubled as mannequins throughout the night.

Evening's highlight

The highlight of the evening was when models from Liquid Gold Modelling Agency took to the runway, showing off a small sample of some of the creative pieces by local designers. These included: Les Campbell, Yola Grey, Julan and Keneea Linton and accessories by Cinderella's Hats and Dahlia's.

The Jamaica Fashion and Apparel Cluster has approximately 82 members. It was formed less than a year ago to assist with the development of businesses in the local fashion industry. Current membership ranges from designers to buyers and manufacturers. It aims to increase the overall competitiveness of the fashion and apparel industries.

This purple dress by designer Les Campbell was part of the sample of local clothing designs showcased at the launch of Island Couture at the Hilton Kingston last Tuesday. The dress is given a pep with matching head accessories by Cinderella Hats and a simple, yet stylish black pair of pumps.

A combination of earth and tropical colours, this dress is complemented by the solid sheer top, skilfuly wrapped to create a very simple and chic look. It is a Yola Grey design. - photos by Nathaniel Stewart/freelance photographer
