DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (CMC):
HAROON LORGAT promised that he would look into India's complaint about Clive Lloyd's comments about the relationship between the Indian Cricket League (ICL) and Indian Premier League (IPL).
Lorgat, the chief executive officer of the International Cricket Council (ICC), the sport's world governing body, acknowledged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had taken umbrage with Lloyd's comments that the two Twenty20 leagues should co-exist.
But the ICC head said he would first check with Lloyd to understand the context and veracity of the remarks that were reported in an Indian newspaper.
The BCCI on Thursday wrote to the ICC and indicated the situation was similar to former Indian batting superstar Sunil Gavaskar being asked to choose between his ICC role and that of a television cricket presenter earlier this year.
"We need to first establish if the merits of the case are the same," Lorgat told Cricinfo. "Personally, I don't believe so. We need to just ensure he does not make comments that are not appropriate. And if it is a different case we need to establish exactly what the facts are without which it is very difficult to make comments."
The BCCI has pushed hard against the ICL and has even gained support from cricket boards around the world to ban players or officials associated with what has been described as 'a rebel league'.
