Lessons from US elections
published: Thursday | November 6, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

As I watched the United States (US) election campaign from the primaries to election day, November 4, I could not help but look at what we call democracy in Jamaica. Barack Obama did not walk over one instant of spilt blood to get to the White House. There was no weeping and wailing of citizens over senseless loss of life, no running away from homes and communities because of intimidation, no motorcade driving dangerously with people hanging out. No overwhelming bad behaviour of candidates.

It was a pleasure to watch and the question is: why can't we? Who will be Jamaica's Barack Obama? While we hope and pray for our country I will take the lessons learnt from Mr Obama. We can achieve as long as we are prepared to work hard and make extraordinary sacrifice. What a lesson for all of us especially our young people, YES WE CAN.

I am, etc.,
