'Tegat' on course for Waterhouse
published: Wednesday | November 5, 2008

Audley Boyd, Assistant Sport Editor

Fairclough

FORMER NATIONAL goalscoring ace Paul 'Tegat' Davis could be the next head coach of Waterhouse, based on negotiations set to take place this week.

This follows the sudden resignation of Wayne Fairclough yesterday, after a meeting among the club's executives.

Concerning its next coaching move, Felix Porter, the club's general secretary and acting president, said, "Right now, we are in the process of getting another coach. In the meantime, Hugh 'Blair will take charge."

Asked who is the coach, Porter said: "It's Tegat (Paul) Davis. He will be in Kingston (tomorrow) for an interview. If that meeting goes well, we will have him on board Saturday morning."

Successful record

Davis, the nation's leading all-time scorer, has a successful record in coaching - both at schoolboy level with William Knibb and in the Premier League.

Davis yesterday confirmed the talks with Waterhouse but stated there were still details to be "finalised".

"I've been talking to them and talking to Arnett Gardens. I had a meeting with them to confirm one or the other, but we have to sit down and talk. Nothing is concrete until everything is finalised, " Davis said.

In the meantime, Porter said Fairclough's resignation represented a loss and was "unexpected", but quite philisophically, he noted it was yet another difficult challenge to which the club must respond.

"I got the resignation this morning when we were in a meeting and by the time I came out of the meeting I heard it on the news. It was sur-prising to me that he went to the media so quickly," remarked Porter.

Fairclough, who also coaches Kingston College in the schoolboy Manning Cup competition, spoke with The Gleaner at yesterday's game which they drew 2-2 with Bridgeport.

He said: "I think that looking back at the past few games, maybe five or so, the decision, I think for me personally, was to move. Sometimes you just have to sit back, take some time to assess things and for me things weren't working out. The club can perhaps move in a different direction with a new coach in charge."
