Traffic hazards in Montego Bay
published: Wednesday | November 5, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I invite you to drive to Montego Bay along the Howard Cooke Boulevard which runs directly into the Alice Eldemire Boulevard. This stretch takes you to the Bogue main road.

I must commend the traffic police for doing a marvellous job controlling the traffic along the Bogue main road and leaving two dangerous intersections un-attended. However, if you make it safely through these two intersections, you are blessed or you have to behave just like those drivers who have changed the road code at these intersections.

1. Drivers repeatedly drive through the intersection on a red light.

2. Traffic proceeding through the intersection from the Freeport direction may have to brake sharply to avoid hitting the vehicle entering from the filter lane. These drivers proceed directly to the right lane as if they have the right of way.

3. At this same intersection, drivers who are heading towards Bogue will approach the intersection in the centre lane, then make a sharp left turn into the filter lane cutting across vehicles that are heading straight ahead for the free zone. I believe a traffic island should be erected to ensure that drivers select their correct lanes at this intersection.

The rules at the traffic light in the vicinity of the Bay West LOJ Shopping Centre have also been changed to suit drivers who continue to make a U-turn from the extreme right and centre lanes. In addition to this illegal turn, once the drivers clear the intersection they stop to drop off or pick up their passengers.

The authorities need to look at these issues as a matter of urgency.

I am, etc.,

F. DEVON KING
