West Kingston tense after shooting deaths
published: Friday | October 31, 2008

Sections of south St Andrew and west kingston were tense late last night, following two shooting incidents, which left at least four people dead and three others nursing gunshot wounds.

Up to press time last night, there was no official report from the police, but senior members of the force told The Gleaner that the gun-fire started shortly after 2 p.m. in Wilton Gardens, popularly known as 'Rema'.

According to sources, members of a police/military team were patrolling the community when they intercepted a group of armed men.

Weapons seized

It is alleged that the men opened fire on the team, which returned the fire.

When the shooting ended, at least six people, including two women, were found with gunshot wounds.

The police said a high-powered rifle, a shotgun, a 9mm pistol, two magazines, three shotgun castings and other assorted ammunition were seized.

It was later determined that the four men were dead, while the women were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds.

A short while later, the police/military team taking the four men to the morgue was fired on and a soldier was hit. He has since been admitted to hospital.
