'Ananda Dean's killers will be caught'
published: Wednesday | October 8, 2008

The police are adamant they will bring the person or people responsible for the kidnapping and killing of Ananda Dean to justice.

Altamont Campbell, acting deputy superintendent responsible for the crime portfolio at the St Andrew North Division, vowed yesterday that "the culprits will be caught and imprisoned".

Campbell told The Gleaner he was still awaiting DNA results to conclusively state whether the body found a week ago in Belvedere, St Andrew is that of the 11-year-old who was reported missing on September 17.

"I am expecting the results this weekend," he said.

Comfortable

Campbell, who is the investi-gating officer assigned to the case, said he felt comfortable with how he handled the report of her disappearance.

"We did everything," he stressed.

He said all the relevant proce-dures were observed after the report was made, and all possibly avenues to find the missing schoolgirl and bring her home safely were explored.

The police followed every possible lead, Campbell said, "raids were even carried out at homes in St Ann and St Andrew".

However, the police were unable to focus their resources at a particular area, because there weren't any strong leads as to where Dean was.

Creating further difficulties, Campbell lamented, "unscrupulous people kept calling the family members, telling them they knew where Ananda was".

We did everything ... all the relevant procedures were observed after the report was made, and all possibly avenues to find the missing schoolgirl and bring her home safely were explored. - Campbell
