The Editor, Sir:In any realistic assessment of Bruce Golding's first year in office, we need to take into consideration two important factors if we are going to be fair to him and not to play the tired game of politics. We should also not be expecting miraculous formulas and instant cures.
In regard to the economy, we should bear in mind that he did not take over the reins of governance from the likes of Lee Quan Hew. He took over a rather battered and 'run down' economy. Second, with regard to crime, he took over a very lawless nation and needs to be more tough on criminals.
Bridle his tongue
However, I think he has the interest of the Jamaican people at heart and wants the best for them. How successful he will be is left to be seen.
It is quite obvious that he does not suffer fools, but as prime minister, he needs at times to bridle his tongue. He should heed the words: "He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city." Proverbs 16 v 32.
