The Editor, Sir:Quite recently, there was a letter to the editor regrading canoes the fishermen use to ply their trade.
The writer stated that the boats that are used are too small, and I agree.
However, speaking from my experience as a seaman on all types of vessels (from cotton-tree canoes to ocean-going ships), the main problem is overloading of boats.
Dead in the water
I live by the Great Bay fishing beach and witness the load that boats going to the Pedro Banks carry. For example, 12 to 15 bottles of gas, 25 gallons of water or ice, up to 12 fish pots, two 40HP outboard engines and three men aboard.
This is a death trap waiting to happen, because the boat is 'dead' in the water. It is at the mercy of the waves, no matter the skill of the captain. This is a matter both fishers and the authorities should be concerned about.
I am, etc.,
