The lawn seen here could do with a little TLC! - Photo by Rita Elliott After lots of mowing, watering, edging and weeding, it's pretty frustrating when your lawn looks thin and worn out. Three mains reasons contribute to this sad situation:
1) Heat
2) Foot traffic
3) Too little watering
and drought
These really take their toll on grass.
There is good news, though. It's easy to make your lawn thick and healthy by over seeding. If you put down a layer of seed over your lawn in the spring or, preferably, fall, all the thin areas start growing grass, and your lawn starts to look terrific again.
Why over seed?
Over time, grass does get old and needs to be replaced. Worn-out lawns invite weeds. Over seeding is a fast, inexpensive way to bring your lawn back to its lush, green, healthy self without tearing everything out and starting over.
When to over seed?
The best time to seed your lawn is in the fall. So, if your lawn is in need of attention, get cracking!
The soil is still warm but the air is cooler. There are fewer weeds for new grass to compete against. Also, diseases that attack seedlings are less active. If you can't seed in the fall, your next best time is the spring.
