How about the rights of dons?
published: Friday | September 19, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

The day the opinion of a don is needed in the House of Representative is the day that Jamaica and Jamaicans have given up on the confidence of the security services.

When I pay my taxes, it goes towards a group of services that are put in place to make my life a bit comfortable, though it is made stressful through the country's high inflation. A part of what is currently making my life uncomfortable is the existence of dons and their cronies, who carry out murders, killings and other illegal acts. Dons are not supposed to be commonplace in this society, though they are.

Stands firm

The six crime bills are a step towards tackling this beast called crime. I have read the legislation proposed and stand firm behind the proposals. This doesn't have to be a matter of discussion. Let's be realistic, isn't it a bit too late to be considerate towards criminals. Crime is out of control and should be brought under control, by any means necessary.

I read in The Gleaner of September 18 that the Minister of National Security, Trevor MacMillan, said: "Irrespective of what is said about them (the dons), they have a right to certain things."

I do agree with Mr Macmillan. they have a right to certain things - the right to abide by the laws of this country.

Let us be mindful that crime is not only affecting Jamaicans living downtown but also Jamaicans living both uptown and rural.

I am, etc.,

St AUBYN RICHARDS
