WESTERN BUREAU:ANCHOVY HIGH created one of the first big upsets of the 2008 ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup football season yesterday when they surprised former champions Frome Technical 1-0 in their Zone B game at Irwin High in St. James.
"This is a good result because this unit has been in training for only two weeks," said former national player Edwin Alcock, the coach of the Anchovy outfit. "Nine of the players who camped with us during the summer did not qualify for the team."
Anchovy got the all-important goal in the 62nd minute when Almondo Kelly found himself with space deep inside the Frome defence and fired past goalkeeper Riando Vassell.
Spectacular entry
In another Zone B game, newcomers Hopewell High made a spectacular entry into the daCosta Cup, surprising Merlene Ottey 2-1 at Rusea's High in Lucea.
Interestingly, three games were not played as teams turned up for the games without identification cards, which is a prerequisite for all games as per the regulations of ISSA.
The competition continues this afternoon in seven of the 12 competing zones. Among the teams stated to see action are former champions Godfrey Stewart, Glenmuir and Dinthill, who will all be seeing their first action of the season; and Cornwall College, who drew their first game; and Herbert Morrison, who tasted defeat.
