Portia lashes Government for purchasing illegal ammunition
published: Wednesday | September 17, 2008

Supporters of incumbent Portia Simpson Miller gather at the National Indoor Sports Centre in St Andrew for a delegates rally on Sunday, ahead of this weekend's vote for president of the People's National Party. - Ricardo Makyn/Staff Photographer.

People's National Party (PNP) President Portia Simpson Miller has weighed in on the revelation that the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) had purchased ammunition from an illegal arms dealer in the United States.

The issue, exposed by The Gleaner and in which Contractor General Greg Christie has expressed an interest to investigate, last week drew an apology from Commissioner of Police Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin.

Answers

Simpson Miller, addressing approximately 4,000 Team PNP supporters during a delegates rally at the National Indoor Sports Centre on Sunday, demanded answers on the deal from Prime Minister Bruce Golding.

"What procurement procedures were put in place for the recent purchase of ammunition for the Jamaica Constabulary Force?" she asked. "How can your government enter into a contract with a known illegal arms dealer? Where was the due diligence?"

Simpson Miller, who is also Opposition Leader, added: "How could you have missed the criminal record of the dealer? We need answers on this one and we need serious answers, including who recommended this arms dealer."

So many blunders

She told delegates that "Jamaica has never experienced a government that has made so many blunders in one year", adding that the Government had failed since taking office a year ago and had all right not to celebrate the mark.

"Usually anniversaries are events to be celebrated. There is nothing to celebrate in this anniversary, nothing at all," Simpson Miller said.
