A 61-year-old woman has given birth to her own granddaughter. The Japanese woman used an egg donated by her daughter for the surrogate pregnancy and is believed to be the oldest lady in Japan to ever give birth.
The date of birth and gender of the baby have not been released by the Suwa Maternity Clinic in Nagano, northwest of Tokyo. It is believed the mother carried the baby for her daughter because she has no uterus.
Speaking on behalf of the clinic, Chihiro Netsu said: "Both surrogate mother and baby were fine."
She also said four women have delivered babies using fertilised eggs from their daughters at the clinic.
The previous oldest mothers in Japan were two 60-year-old women implanted with their own fertilized eggs in the United States.
