Reckless driving on the roads
published: Wednesday | September 17, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

It has been ages since I have seen police at various intersections watching for persons who break lights, overtake carelessly and participate in general reckless driving - robot taxis are most often to blame.

Nearly every night, we are faced with another road fatality on the news, and the desperate pleas of our police begging persons to drive with caution - to no avail. It is quite obvious that the majority of persons on the road have no clue how to drive or have ever read the road code - can they even read? We need traffic patrol back on the streets, charging those who refuse to obey.

I would like to suggest that independent auditors be hired to seek out those at the various depots who are paid off to issue driver's licences. It should be mandatory that once you are charged with reckless driving, your licence be immediately suspended, and in order to reinstate your licence, you must do community service (preferably at a hospital or morgue) and retake your entire driving exam, rode code included.

I am, etc.,

S. HECTOR
