Days after Jamaica's stunning performance at the Beijing Olympics, the Government announced that it's undertaking a massive celebration for the athletes, but Tropical Storm Gustav soon battered Jamaica causing loss of lives and widespread damage. Yesterday, a Gleaner team took to the streets and asked:
Should the Government scrap the celebration for the Olympians and instead pump funds into helping the victims of Tropical Storm Gustav?
Irene Bailey, 60, retiree:
The Government should use the money to build back the country because we don't have any roads and they should help the poor people. Some children are on the streets can't even go to school, some people don't live anywhere, so they should help the Gustav victims.
Samuel Haughton, 61,taxi operator:
The Government should have celebration for the athletes because they have done good for Jamaica and now the entire world recognises Jamaica more.
Corey Russell, 21, merchandiser:
The Government can do both the celebration and assist the victims of Gustav by cutting some of the celebration money expenses and use some of the money to help the flood victims.
Violet Shaw-Charlton, 50, teacher:
The Government should celebrate the Olympians because they have done well for the country, and they are our own Jamaicans and now the world looks upon Jamaicans as a great set of people.
Oswald Green, 70, driver:
The Government should use the money to repair the roads in the country, take off the street people from the streets, as every night you hear people crying out on the radio needing help, and too much excitement for the Olympians will only turn them into fools.
Devado Buckham, 14, student:
The Government should have a celebration as this is the first time that Jamaica has done so well at the Olympics, and Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell have encouraged me to do well as a person.
