NOTE-WORTHY
published: Wednesday | September 17, 2008

Totally shocked!

I recently encouraged a very good female friend of mine to join the police force. She always felt that she could in some way contribute to the development of our country with the skills she acquired while living overseas. Reading this story yesterday, about the woman police being raped by her own colleagues, has offered no comfort to this young woman. What is wrong with our policemen in Jamaica? They can, in fact, manipulate the system. They are in charge of it. Is there not a special branch that this matter could be reported to? I am totally shocked and in awe at this story! This matter needs to be properly investigated immediately. If this is true and can be done to a member of the police force, what protection do ordinary citizens have?

Follow the story

Not everyone has a sister, a daughter, or a niece as members of his/her family, but everyone has a mother. I am also sure that everyone would want their mother not to experience anything as harmful as the described event. I find it hard to believe that anyone could rationalise a reason for raping anyone. And, although on face value only, I tend to believe the complainant's view of the events as they unfolded, it's very difficult to believe that she would willingly fictionalise this event to create limelight for herself. I truly hope that the media will follow this story to its proper and fitting conclusion.
