Assertiveness is the ability to express yourself and your rights without violating the rights of others. Acting assertively will allow you to feel self-confident and will generally gain you the respect of your peers and friends. Many people feel that attending to their legitimate needs and asserting their rights is being selfish. Selfishness means being concerned about only your rights, with little or no regard for others.
Some things cannot be left to others, or even your own parents, to be done. It is not selfishness to pursue them. You have personal responsibility to do the following:
1. Set a major goal and follow a path. When you learn to succeed at mini goals, you will be motivated to challenge grand goals.
2. Finish what you start. Develop the habit of finishing self-motivated projects.
3. Socialise with others of similar interest. Mutual support is motivating.
4. Learn how to learn. Dependency on others for knowledge is self-defeating. Through self-education you will enjoy success.
