BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):
Former Barbados and West Indies batsman, Floyd Reifer, smashed six sixes in an over on Sunday to complete one of the most remarkable feats in cricket.
Batting for University of the West Indies in the Barbados Cricket Association's Twenty20 League, he accomplished the feat against Wanderers Cricket Club.
The 36-year-old became the first batsman to achieve the milestone in the Twenty20 tournament, which is now in its second year.
An achievement
"One thing I always wanted to do in my cricket career was to hit six sixes in an over and I was delighted I achieved it on Sunday. To be honest, I did not really sink in," Reifer said.
The unfortunate bowler was Simon Steel, a part-time off-spinner and grandson of former West Indies Cricket Board president, Captain Peter Short.
Steel represented Barbados in the West Indies Under-19 tournament last year as a top-order batsman.
Reifer eventually ended on 88 not out off just 26 balls, with nine sixes and five fours as UWI posted the season's best score 226 for four. In reply, Wanderers reached 93 for six to ensure UWI maintained their unbeaten record in the tournament.
Reifer's six-hitting feat came on the 40th anniversary of the date when Sir Garfield Sobers hit six sixes in an over off Malcolm Nash at Sophia Gardens in Swansea.
