Waterhouse, Barbican hunt spot in final
published: Wednesday | September 3, 2008

Robert Bailey, Gleaner Writer

Defending champions Waterhouse will be looking to secure their spot in the mid-season final of the Jamaica Football Federation/Sherwin Williams women's competition, when they oppose Barbican in today's top-of-the-table clash at the Drewsland Mini Stadium.

Waterhouse, who are playing in their last match of the round, lead the standings with eight points, one ahead of Barbican (7) who have a game in hand.

In the day's other games, Portmore Strikers, also on seven points, will be hoping to clinch their spot when they tackle Harbour View (4) at Racing Oval, while Maverley/Hughenden (4) await bottom place Arnett Gardens (2) at the Tony Spaulding Sports Complex.

Waterhouse defeated Barbican 1-0 in the quarter-finals of the knockout competition earlier this season and according to their coach, Xavier Gilbert, his team should repeat the feat.

"I am very confident we can beat them because we have done it before and I believe we can do it again," Gilbert noted.

"This will be a very competitive game based on the quality of the teams and both sides are also aiming to secure a place in the mid-season final," said Gilbert.

He added: "This is also our last match before the mid-season final and we would like to end with a victory."

Optimism

Charles Edwards, coach of Barbican is also optimistic.

"My team is playing very confidently right now because the players are getting better as the season progresses," said Edwards. "I think Waterhouse can expect a very tough challenge from us because our aim is to make the mid-season final and our team is working towards this."

Edwards also noted he was looking for a good all-round performance from all his players because everyone knows the task that lies ahead and the players are working toward achieving the result.

In A league action, Seaview Gardens host Trelawny Women at Seaview Gardens and Olympic Gardens entertain Meadhaven United at Cling Cling Oval.

All matches start at 4p.m.
