Environmental destruction
published: Wednesday | September 3, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

When will Jamaicans realise that we cannot continue to abuse our environment and expect our country to retain its beauty?

After reading the article 'A bird or two in the bush' (Lifestyle section) written by Janet Silvera and published on September 2, I must conclude that preserving our environment is not one of our priorities.

We have overfished our ocean and destroyed our wetlands, causing the fish to slowly disappear. We continue to cut down our forests and now the wildlife is disappearing.

We destroy our bird sanctuaries for fun, under the guise of shooting birds for food and now our birds are disappearing.

How much longer do we expect to boast that Jamaica is a beautiful island?

I am, etc.,
