National Gallery closed - Among several agencies to be reopened shortly
published: Wednesday | September 3, 2008

Dr David Boxer, chief curator of the National Gallery of Jamaica, stands over the painting entitled City Life, by Osmond Watson. Through the Ambassador's fund for cultural preservation, the US embassy is spending just under J$2 million on the restoration of five famed paintings. The paintings, damaged by hurricanes and human error, will be sent to a lab in Denver, Colorado, where they will be restored. - Kyle Macpherson/Freelance Photographer

Due to heavy rains dumped on the island by Tropical Storm Gustav last weekend, the public is being advised that the National Gallery of Jamaica will be closed until Thursday, September 4, 2008.

Meanwhile, Sajoune Rose, public relations officer, at the Institute of Jamaica, located at 10-16 East Street, said the effects caused only minor damage to the centre. Repairs are, however, in progress and the Gallery will re-open soon.

"As of Thursday, September 4, the public can come out and continue using its facilities," she said.

The Fort Charles Museum in Port Royal is also closed to the public, until further notice, due to the lack of electricity and water brought on by the passage of Tropical Storm Gustav. The Museum will reopen as soon as utilities are restored.
