WICB remains positive clash will go ahead
published: Thursday | August 28, 2008

West Indies Cricket Board Chief Executive Dr Donald Peters. - File

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):

DESPITE THE cloud of doubt hanging over November's Stanford Twenty20 match, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) remains positive the US$20 million clash will go ahead as scheduled.

Digicel, the West Indies team sponsor last Friday filed an injunction in London to prevent the match from going ahead, claiming their rights had been infringed.

WICB chief executive Dr Donald Peters, however, said this would be contested and said he believed the matter would be resolved in the board's favour.

"We are going to contest this injunction. Our attorneys in London are working on it. Our position remains the same," Peters was quoted as saying.

"We are not part of this in that it is not our team, it is not the West Indies team that will be taking part, so Digicel's rights are not infringed," he said.

Disagreement

"They are our sponsors but we disagree on this matter. They believe one thing and we believe another but we expect that commonsense will prevail."

The injunction relates solely to the proposed match between England and the Stanford Super-stars, part of the five-year, US$100 million series announced back in June.

However, Digicel is seeking to have the WICB withdraw all approvals for the Stanford Super Series, the sequence of matches leading up to the November 1 clash.

Digicel has in the past indicated it had no issues with the game per se, but contended that its rights and entitlements as it related to its agreement with WICB, were being ignored.

The Irish telecommunications giant currently has a contract with the WICB which expires in 2012.
