Simoes wants players with right attitude
published: Thursday | August 28, 2008

NATIONAL TECHNICAL director René Simoes has continued to stress that the right attitude will be as important a criterion as technical ability for players wishing to represent Jamaica's Reggae Boyz.

"We want players that are hungry and have the right attitude," Simoes said following the national team's training session at the Buttercup field in Mona on Tuesday.

"Winning is an attitude that we are trying to get. Players must not be satisfied; always they must want to do better," he said.

The technical director recently commended midfielder Jermaine Hue for his attitude after coming on to the pitch in Jamaica's World Cup qualifier against Canada last week in Toronto.

The team got its campaign off to a solid start following a 1-1 draw with the hosts. Jamaica have been placed in the CONCACAF 'Group of Death', which sees them face Mexico, Honduras and Canada, with only two teams going through to the final round.

Looking to press advantage

With the Jamaicans hosting Mexico in their first home game of the semi-final round on September 6, Simoes will be looking to press home the early advantage by coming away from that fixture with all three points.

"Whenever you play at home, you look for a win. We are feeling confident and are looking to go through, so we need maximum points at home," he said.

Currently, the player in training are all Jamaica based. The majority are Under-21 players. The overseas-based contingent is not expected to join the team until several days before the game.

However, Simoes has expressed satisfaction with the efforts of the players so far.

"The attitude of the players has been good. I think that they are realising that it takes a lot of hard work and commitment at this level," he said.
