JTA awaits word on salary study
published: Thursday | August 28, 2008

The Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) says it is still awaiting word from the Ministry of Finance and Public Service about the study that focuses on realigning teachers' salaries to 80 per cent of private-sector wages.

The union had become frustrated that the study, which was part of the 2006/2008 heads of agreement, was incomplete. It had passed a resolution giving the Government until midnight last Saturday to submit the document.

Review

Doran Dixon, president of the JTA, said he was informed that the document was received by the finance ministry last Wednesday. He noted that the minister had requested time to thoroughly review the document.

"We are being gracious and allowing time, so we are hoping that they uphold their end of the bargain and get to us soon this week," Dixon told The Gleaner, Monday.

Good sense

He added: "The resolution still stands and we are hoping that good sense will prevail."

The JTA had asked the Govern-ment for a 50 per cent increase in year one and 50 per cent in year two. However, the Government has offered a 15 per cent increase in year one and seven per cent in year two.
