Now or never for sugar industry
published: Thursday | August 28, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

It is obvious that the sugar industry is in a crisis, and for the industry to survive it has to be subsidised to meet its demands. This will help the industry out of the predicament that it has found itself in for too long.

The relevant authority has been 'pussyfooting' around, by not modernising the industry to educate the management, staff, and workers to be efficient and competitive in the global marketplace that now exists.

However, I would like to use this medium to call upon the powers that be to readily accept the technological changes that exist globally and work with them through mobilisation, implementation, leadership, synergy and a resolution to know where the industry is going.

Failure to do so will result in stagnation, bankruptcy and a total collapse of the industry, which our economy cannot afford to lose at this moment.

It is now or never for the industry.

I am, etc.,
