Extortion in another form
published: Wednesday | August 27, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I write this letter with a sense of utter disgust at the treatment being handed out to motorists who have to park in the downtown Kingston area.

Mr Mayor please wake up. Extortion is not only from persons demanding money from store owners. When motorists have to fork out money to pay idle boys for parking in areas that are not properly regulated by the state, this is extortion.

Fearful

I write with specific reference to the empty lot in front of the Pearnel Charles Arcade and beside the Kingston Parish Church in front of the St William Grant Park. Motorists are being forced to pay money to men who do not have any ticket books. If you refuse to pay, they surround your cars.

People pay in fear of their lives. Where does this money go? Mayor help! Please take over this area for a car park. I would prefer to pay to the state than to pay to these extortionists.

I am, etc.,
