Cabinet has approved a new chairman for the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC).

Robin Levy, deputy general manager of the Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE), and general manager of the JSE subsidiary, the Jamaica Central Securities Depository, has been appointed chairman of the JUTC.

The position became vacant in June, following the death of Douglas Chambers, who was killed by gunmen.

Levy told The Gleaner yesterday that he and Chambers were friends, having attended the same high school, St George's College in Kingston.

Difficult role

Levy said his role as chairman would be non-executive and, as such, he would not be involved in the daily management of the JUTC.

Noting that he was aware it would be a difficult job, he said: "What I can tell you is that (there) will definitely be more teamwork."

Levy said that about eight months ago, he was asked to serve as president of the money-strapped bus company, but declined.

Approval

The proposal for the new board was taken to Cabinet on Monday, where both the members and a new chairman were approved.

Three other members were also approved for addition to the JUTC board. They are attorney Richard Bonner; civil engineer Michael Subratie and chartered accountant Ewart Gilzean.

The three replace board members who demitted office prior to the death of Chambers on June 27. All the other board members have retained their places.
