The Editor, Sir:
I am writing to discuss my frustration and disgust with the University of the West Indies and its lack of regard for students.
While it cannot be disputed that the University of the West Indies (UWI) is among the best regionally and internationally, I must say that it is not very student-friendly.
As a final-year graduate student, I am supposed to be submitting my research paper soon and the first step in getting this done is to register online for the course.
I received several emails from UWI's Student Administrative System over the past weeks, stating that graduate students can start registering online immediately and that the final date for early registration is September 5. After that time, all students would have to pay a late registration fee.
Annoyed
I have tried on several occasions to register for my course but to no avail. What makes me annoyed and frustrated, though, is that there seems to be no way by which I can obtain information or assistance from anyone at UWI regarding my inability to register.
I have submitted numerous emails and made several calls which either went unanswered or for which no one could tell me the correct thing to do.
I think it is very unfair, too, for me to have to pay late fees to UWI after the date for early registration has passed and I haven't registered, which in any case would not have been my fault.
I have seen too many students kicked out of UWI because they could not pay their fees or register on time. I must also express my frustration with the examination system. On June 19, I sat my final examination (GT66B) and after nearly two months, I still cannot get my exam grade or any indication of whether I have passed or failed.
What concerns me the most is that other graduate students like me did exams after that date and have got their exam grades, but students in this particular class are still waiting on their grades.
We are now in another school year and we still haven't receive our grades for exams done last academic year. That is just absurd and inconsiderate.
I am, etc.,
K. BROWN
