Distressful PNP disunity
published: Tuesday | August 26, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

With the race for the leadership of the People's National Party (PNP) now in high gear, the tension and tempers continue to rise as supporters of both camps clash in a war of words and even physical confrontations. With the battle lines now clearly visible, the question being asked is: Can the PNP survive September 20?

After witnessing this past weekend first-hand just how divisive the party has become, I strongly believe that whoever is the victor will have a monumental task ahead.

As a young Comrade, I fear for the future of my party. To know the foundations on which this great organisation was established, to see that it has been eroded over time and the raw animosity that we now have towards each other leaves a feeling that words cannot express.

Servants of the people

Even now I question just how effective an Opposition we can be when there's no longer even a pretence at unity? We are, after all, servants of the Jamaican people.

Do not misunderstand, I have no problem with the current leadership race. I do, however, have a problem with it being used as an excuse for us to attack each other. The dirty politics and mud-slinging tactics being employed leave a bad taste in my mouth.

I believe party supporters and the people of Jamaica deserve more and a whole lot better from our leaders. I deserve and demand more.

If this is all the PNP has to offer Jamaica, then it has no business being in government.

I pray that September 21 will see the sun rising on a new PNP - re-energised, renewed and ready to serve the people of Jamaica.

I am, etc.,

KAT DELANEY
