We love Asafa, regardless
published: Friday | August 22, 2008

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WITH ALL the great things happening in the Olympics for Jamaica so far, one thing has been particularly disturbing, and that is the attack being meted out to one of our athletes, Asafa Powell. It has been most disappointing and downright demeaning the negative things that have been said in the media, as well as by his fellow Jamaicans.

I have never met Asafa personally, but from what I have seen of him since his entry into the athletics world, I formed the opinion that he is a great person who loves his country and is totally undeserving of all the negatives now being heaped upon him.

Support from fellow Jamaicans

What Asafa needs now is not destructive criticisms, but support from all Jamaicans, even those abroad. Yes, I agree that he has not lived up to our expectations, especially at the big events. Obviously, there is a problem, but this does not give any person the right to bash him and ultimately damage his character as a person.

Asafa, we still love you, no matter what. Hold your head high and face your critics with integrity. You have done Jamaica proud and you have nothing to be ashamed of.

I am, etc.,

TANYA CLAYTON
