Judge questions death sentences left hanging
published: Wednesday | August 20, 2008

Supreme Court Judge Donald McIntosh on Monday expressed concern that the Government was not carrying out the death penalty.

He made the comments when he sentenced 25-year-old fisherman, Junior Campbell, of August Town, St Andrew, to hang for a double murder.

Death sentences

The judge said that death sentences, passed by the courts for the last two decades, have not been carried out.

Campbell, also called 'Simple', was convicted of the murder of a couple, who was shot dead at their home in August Town in February 2005.

A Home Circuit Court jury convicted Campbell, on May 5, of the murder of Marlene Brown and her common-law-husband, Stanford 'Trevor' Hall.

Difficult time

The couple were at home with their five young children on the night of February 25, 2005 when gunmen kicked down the door and shot the couple.

The court was told that the persons taking care of the children were having a difficult time doing so.

The disclosure prompted the judge to make a special call for the Government to establish caregiving facilities for children who lose parents to violence.
