Time to get more from Puma contracts
published: Wednesday | August 20, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I sincerely hope that all of Jamaica is celebrating one of the most significant sports moment in the history of Jamaica.

I am sure people can point to various moments when they thought they were seeing the brightest moments in soccer or cricket, but let me inform all Jamaicans especially those on the sports committees, this is probably the greatest moment you will ever see.

From my professional standpoint in the United States, owning a sports management company that hosts various sporting events around America and working with corporate sponsors, of my events, I say to Jamaica's sports commissions (or whatever), - re-negotiate your contracts with Puma.

Increase involvement

They are receiving and have got more publicity and marketing exposure from the success of Jamaican athletes than any other shoe company in the world.

There is absolutely no reason why Puma should not be doing more for the youths of Jamaica in track and other sports.

If Usain Bolt were an American, the agreements, deals and contracts would be much greater.

Did anyone see the billboard in China? I did.

Any company that wishes to be involved with Jamaica and its success should be made to increase their corporate involvement.

There is absolutely no reason for any sports team or organisation - be it cricket, soccer, track and especially basketball - to be starving of material and finance.

Watch out for other corporations to exploit the success of Jamaica. We might never see this kind of dominance again.

I am, etc.,
