The once-popular push cart derby is set to make a re-appearance after inclement weather forced a postponement on Sunday.
SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine:
The return of the once supremely popular push cart derby on August 17 was not to be.
Anxious fans of the once-yearly event had to put their expectations on hold once more as tropical storm Fay threatened to make conditions unbearable for the contestants on Sunday.
According to Winston Walker, public relations officer at Kaiser, Jamaica, the committee in charge of the event, bearing in mind the nature of the activities, had no other option but to postpone.
The push cart derby should have been held under the theme 'Push cart, not drugs'.
Walker went on to tell Across The Nation that the event still promised to be bigger and better than ever with the addition of several new features. According to walker, despite the postponement, the more than 60 carts scheduled to take to the track are still very much available.
The prize for winning the competition is $150,000, while the second-place athlete will take home $80,000. Third place will earn $50,000.00, which, according to Walker, has kept participants very interested.
Once a feature of the hills in Discovery Bay, St Ann, the derby has been missing for more than 10 years.
