Gleaner, Petrojam in KO football finalThe Gleaner and Petrojam will meet in the KSAFA/Scotia Bank Group Business House KO football final on August 13 after hard-fought semi-final wins last Wednesday.
Petrojam, a Division Two team, came from behind to clip Division One campaigners Carib Cement 3-2 in one semi-final at Barbican, while The Gleaner edged UWI 9-8 on penalty kicks after both teams went goalless in regulation and extra time.
In a gruelling encounter at UWI Bowl, play was evenly contested. UWI controlled the midfield for the most part but The Gleaner created more chances, which they failed to capitalise on.
In the end, it came down to the dreaded penalty shoot-out which saw all 11 players (including the goalkeepers) from both teams kicking from the spot.
The Gleaner, thanks to good goalkeeping from Everdean Scarlett, prevailed, but only just.
In the other semi-final, Petrojam drew first blood when Kevin Bartley netted in the ninth minute. However, Cement gained the equaliser through Fabian Nethersole in the 13th minute and went ahead in the 38th minute through former national player Milton Griffiths, to lead 2-1 at half-time.
Athas Burnard levelled the scores at 2-2 in the 55th minute, while Enos Henry got the winner for Petrojam in the 81st minute.
The venue for the final is yet to be decided.
Meanwhile, The Gleaner and UWI will meet again tomorrow in a crucial Division One match at Constant Spring starting 4 p.m. Victory for The Gleaner would see them in the league semis. Leaders UWI are already through. Also tomorrow, Unicomer and NHT will meet in a bottom-of-the-table Division One clash at Jesse Ripoll to decide which team is relegated to the second division next season.
