The EDITOR, Sir:"Before God and all mankind I pledge the love and loyalty of my heart." I am sure everyone knows these words and has recited them at least once before. This pledge should inspire us even to this day to become better citizens and countrymen.
This pledge clearly tells us how to live and dwell with each other in peace and harmony. Have we reached to the stage where we feel as though we have arrived and no one can tell us how to live our lives? Are we trying to live like some countries where our individuality is more important then helping someone else along the way?
We have all seen it, the Chinese, the Indians who stick together and help each other out. I am not saying Jamaicans never do that, but I don't think we do it often enough.
When will we play our part in advancing the welfare of the whole human race? Is it after we have killed off everyone and their dog? Who will be left to advance the world's welfare - the gunmen?
Jamaicans, I implore you, continue to do your best and the good Lord will bless you and your family. On this Independence Day, we remember where we are coming from, but most important, we focus on where we are going.
I am, etc.,
