Bracing for a Dover showdown
published: Sunday | August 3, 2008

Glenroy Sinclair, Assignment Coordinator

The support teams of Douglas Gore and David Summerbell are engaged in a war of words, over who will dominate today's meet at the Dover Raceway, St Ann.

"According to Summerbell's mechanics, if I am not doing a lap time of under 1.20-seconds, then might as well I stay away from the track," Gore told Automotives on Thursday.

Reports are that Summerbell's fans are predicting that he will break the track record again, but that has not driven any fear in Gore's heart. Instead, it seems to have made him more hungry for the renewed rivalry.

In the meantime, Summerbell, who also spoke with us on Thursday, was in high spirits. The former Caribbean champion driver said his car was ready and should now be able to negotiate the sharp corners much faster.

While Gore and Summerbell are bracing themselves for the showdown, Gerald Rhoden, a Jamaican who lives in Denver, Colorado, United States, arrived in the island last week and has rolled out his Epic Prototype car for today's contest.

No stranger

He is no stranger to the Dover circuit and is looking forward to upsetting the apple cart.

"The car really feels good and I'm hoping to give them good competition," said Rhoden.

Scores of competitors are expected to spend most of the morning racing against the clock, in order to qualify for grid positions. The first event is scheduled to get under way at noon.

Tedroy Burton has promised to put on a good show with his Honda Civic. The Elizabeth-based driver has grown to become one of the crowd favourites, and a lot is expected of him. "I am coming to have fun," said Burton.

Dominate

While Matthew Gore will not be racing, his teammates Gary Williams and Guy Fraser seem to have prepared themselves well, and look ready to take on some of the big names in the sport.

The Bowlas are expected to dominate their respective classes again, like the previous race meet. A young entry on the list of competitors is Ornella Leahong, a 17-year-old upper sixth-form student of Ardenne High, who also drives go-kart.

She will be bringing a pink 1989 Toyota FX Corolla, which is sponsored by Ankara Auto, Eurosport, Leapro and Catherine's Peak.

"I am not expecting to gain a podium position but will definitely do my best, with the help of my dad, Wayne Leahong, and brother, Chad Leahong," said the teenager.
