Flogging futile
published: Thursday | July 31, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I write in response to Winsome Clarke's letter in The Gleaner of July 30. Ms Clarke makes reference to the Bible in making the point that there is nothing that the present Government can do to stem the flow of corruption in our society. She then goes on to advocate public flogging as an alternative to hanging.

As I read, however, I thought to myself if Ms Clarke is even remotely suggesting that the Bible is fulfilling, in Jamaica and the world, then the heart of man (perhaps literally) has become wicked beyond measure.

If imprisonment, and all its concomitant treatment, do not deter these men, will flogging make a difference? In your words, Ms Clarke, "I think not!"

I am, etc,
