The Editor, Sir:
Every June, an extravagant mania overwhelms our schools. These lavish events are called graduations.
They run the full range from kindergarten, preparatory, primary and high schools. Day-care centres will, no doubt, be added soon.
Graduation ceremonies should be limited to the successful completion of a course of study, i.e. high school including the traditional prize-giving exercises.
These excessive productions require the rental or purchase of paraphernalia, including gowns, caps, corsages, latest-style garments and shoes and the like - and these are only for the graduates!
Parents and other family members, to maintain 'face', compete in the newest and most modern designs. Additionally, there is the cost of a platform, chairs and other decorations, the rental of high-cost electrical PA systems complete with DJ, and 'music'.
The financial effect on our poorer socio-economic class is devastating, and, in many instances, the families are overwhelmed. The cost of these frenzies is unnecessary and encourages poor financial habits like borrowing and incorrect spending priorities.
The sad irony is that school re-opens in September with all the real essential costs - books, uniforms, shoes, et cetera - desperately needed. How sad!
I am, etc.,
