Dubbed the 'spark of elegance' of the annual Denbigh Agricultural and Industrial Show, the National Farm Queen coronation will be the highlight of the activities to mark the opening 56th edition of the three-day event tomorrow.
Twelve parish farm queens are slated to parade, seeking to win cash and top prizes amounting to more than $100,000.
The finalists are all involved in the agriculture sector; several are current students or graduates of the College of Agriculture, Science and Education, while two are managing directors of their own agricultural enterprises; and, a few are teachers of the subject.
Women in agriculture
The parish queens are between the ages of 18 and 30 years.
The Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS), which organises the annual show, has been staging the farm queen competition since 1963.
Norman Grant, president of the JAS, said women have played a pivotal role in agricultural activities, from reaping to preparing the food produced.
"It is very important that these women are recognised as they continue to contribute to food security in Jamaica," he said.
