HOTTEST TOPICS ON THE COCKTAIL CIRCUIT

The blind board

1 It's the classic case of 'see no evil, hear no evil'. All over town, there are whisperings about the most public corporate romance ever known in this here country. Hello? The board pleads ignorance. But those who observe corporate behaviour say the boss's behaviour critically influences the ethics of a corporation. So, how could the boss be having an affair with the near-boss? It raises serious issues about checks and balance and conflict of interest. This one is no nine-day talk, and is being regarded as one of the lowest points in corporate misbehaviour.

Church to the rescue

2 The fallen soldier can look to the church for succor. Word is that members have formed a prayer brigade and are sending up long and detailed petitions to the Almighty. They are asking for forgiveness and restoration. Of course, it is the male members who are quickest to offer support as they recognise that some demons are harder to slay.

Shifting sands

3 There is great puzzlement that a serious matter of corporate shenanigans could have been ignored by the boss. But this is what happened. Personal telephone calls were made to the gentleman warning him of shifting sands and he did nothing. Employees are recalling his early warning, "I will not go down alone", and are now wondering who could be sacrificed. Files are being reviewed, emails copied and notes secured for there is bound to be a showdown.

Waiting to exhale

4 One would have thought that after 10 months, those waiting to exhale would have given up. But that's not the case. The gentlemen continue to work the phone, making frantic calls after every new appointment. Some have stopped taking his calls, but he is not giving up for, sometimes, he turns up at public functions hoping to chew on some official ear.

The stork's visit

5 The stork's visit to an offspring of the upper crust is expected early 2009. Already, all kinds of grand plans are in the making. The anxious grandmamma has already done a huge deal of shopping and there is more to come. The expectant parents are ecstatic.
