Honeymoon tips for 'dry-land' tourists
published: Saturday | July 26, 2008

Wedding planner Lorraine Ross Clunie of Elegant Weddings gives recommendations for couples planning their honeymoon.

1. Safety first

Honeymooners, make sure you're aware of your surroundings. Get a good road map from the information desk at your hotel. Never ask a stranger for information. If the honeymoon is in Jamaica, it may be easier to manoeuvre because there is no language barrier. Make landmarks with buildings when going out so you don't get lost.

2. Be a tourist for once

If you don't have to drive, don't. Use public transportation that will take you to and from your destination. It's affordable with the outrageous gas prices today; it's also good exercise; go ahead and play tourist for your honeymoon. Many newly-weds tend to be too tired to drive home after a busy vacation.

3. Don't limit yourself

Take the package that pays for room and breakfast only. This will give you the opportunity to explore a variety of options outside the resort. When you take an all-inclusive package, you rarely get the opportunity to utilise all the resources, which usually results in waste.

4. Jamaica, no problem

Jamaica is highly recommended for a honeymoon. Apart from the sand, sea, sun and hospitality, it gives you the opportunity to do almost anything. A honeymoon outside the island may be restrictive, with laws you might have to get familiar with. You're newly-weds, so be carefree for once.

5. Don't be too anxious

A honeymoon comes with responsibilities. Don't go on your honeymoon the same day as your wedding; wait until the next morning. It's the bride's day and she might be tired from planning and executing a beautiful wedding. Leaving the next day will give both of you the opportunity to have a good night's rest.
