Roen Nelson back on target in T&T
published: Monday | July 21, 2008

Roen Nelson - File

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):

Guyana's Nigel Codrington and Collie Hercules and Roen Nelson of Jamaica were all on target when matches in the Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) Pro League continued on Saturday night.

Nelson, on loan from Portmore United in Jamaica, propelled Joe Public to a hard fought 2-1 win over North East Stars. He scored both goals - in the 17th minute and a 42nd minute penalty.

Chance wasted

Kevin Jeffrey pulled one back for Stars in the 80th minute, who wasted a chance to snatch a late draw when T&T World Cup striker Anthony Wolfe headed wide from point-blank range in the dying seconds.

At the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Codring-ton's rich form continued in front of goal as he netted a pair of goals for Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA in a come-from-behind 2-1 win over cellar-placed Tobago United.

Veteran Guyanese striker Collie Hercules had given Tobago United a 20th minute lead, before Codrington tied the score five minutes from the interval.

Ten minutes before the final whistle, Codrington scored again from the penalty-spot to secure all three points for his team and improve to 20 points, the same as W Connection in third spot and six behind stuttering defending champions Clico San Juan Jabloteh.

Penalty given

The penalty was given by referee Ishmael Mohammed when Tobago United defender Jamal Jack prevented an obvious scoring opportunity by pushing the ball over the bar with his hands.

For the offence, Jack was given marching orders and Tobago United had to play the rest of the match with 10 men.

Colombian midfielder Christian Viveron was also on the mark as his 69th minute strike earned W Connection a 1-0 win over Defence Force at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

Earlier at Couva, the improving St Ann's Rangers hammered newcomers Ma Pau 5-0 with Keon Edwards (13th), Errol McFarlane Jr (27th), Devon Modeste (50th), Josimar Belgrave (52nd) and Christon Thomas (79th) the scorers.

Jabloteh lost their second straight match, going under to United Petrotrin 1-0 at the Palo Seco Recreation Ground with T&T striker Jerrol Forbes' 89th minute goal making the visitors pay for a number of missed chances.

Petrotrin's win, their first in six matches, moved the club to 23 points from 12 matches, three adrift of leaders Jabloteh ahead of tomorrow's next round of matches.
