The Phillips challenge
published: Monday | July 21, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Regarding the challenge of leadership of the People's National Party (PNP) by Dr Peter Phillips, I too would like to compliment him for such a bold move and, more importantly, for his admission of playing a part in the demise of the Jamaican economy. At least both he and Golding have admitted their contribution; what say you, Mrs Simpson Miller?

Expectation of early election

It is very disturbing, and also disappointing, to hear some members within the PNP criticising Dr Phillips for making such a move, saying that his timing is wrong because of the expectation of an early election. However, the only way that an early election will occur is if the courts grant the disputed seats to the PNP. Other than that, Prime Minister Bruce Golding will never call any election until 2012.

In previous articles, I have enunciated that a good leader must be able to lead, plan, control and organise. In my opinion, I honestly believe that Mrs Simpson Miller does not fit into this category; and in this critical juncture in this globalised economy, our country needs someone with such qualities.

Undoubtedly, any analysis and examination of members within the PNP for such qualities will lead to Dr Phillips. Beyond these qualities, he is unquestionably brilliant, a sharp thinker and, unlike Mrs Simpson Miller, more aligned with the business sector.

Finally, considering all the scandals associated with the PNP under Mrs Simpson Miller's watch, I am very surprised that she is still the leader of the party with such a divided support.

I am, etc.,

Dr MICHAEL THOMPSON
