Fashion takes centre stage at Dancehall Night
published: Sunday | July 20, 2008

Denise Reid, Gleaner Writer

Vybz Kartel perspiring heavily under his fur coat during his performance on Dancehall Night at Reggae Sumfest '08.

Perhaps the most popular night at Sumfest is Dancehall Night: a night when fashion reigns supreme.

And, after Busy Signal stepped out in a fabulous three-piece suit, there is no denying that he is dancehall night's undisputed king of fashion.

This was the second consecutive year that Busy Signal stunned the crowd wearing a fabulous Carlton Brown creation.

Responding to questions from The Gleaner, Busy Signal revealed that Carlton Brown is definitely his signature stylist for the event.

"An me nah change," he exclaimed, explaining that ever since he was introduced to the stylist by Voicemail there had been no looking back.

Making a statement

On a night when everyone in attendance, from deejays to patrons, came out to make a statement, wild hairstyles and outfits that included boots and fur, drew stares and in some cases laughs.

Deejays who stood out included Assassin, whose red shirt, silver jacket and gloves and red-and-silver sneakers were hot. DeMarco's pin-striped suit complete with a light-orange shirt and tie also was something to look at.

Amid all the fashion showcased, white was the dominant colour, with artistes such as Beenie Man, Ninja Man, Mavado (who gave a spellbinding performance), D'Angel and Harry Toddler donning garments stitched in white and accented with silver or gold.

Vybz Kartel, however, got it wrong, in a long fur coat and hat which he wore over a suit which caused him to do more sweating than singing. In an outfit that caused her to resemble a flamingo, Spice's outfit was another fashion miss.

Locals in the audience also wore some eye-catching outfits, with local dancer Marvin, who was decked out in Gucci from head to toe, and many guys wearing outfits with sneakers to match.
