The Editor, Sir:By now the country must know the situation with the national airline (Lovebird). However daunting the situation, there must be a way for us to finance the airline by cutting cost, improving efficiency and standards most of all. It has cost us a lot already and is costing us more as we speak; however, this should not mean getting rid of it and finding another way to transport those who choose to fly in and out of Jamaica.
With no knowledge of financing and budgeting, I do not have the first clue as it relates to how the Government should go about making sure that Air Jamaica is financed and not sold. From what I am reading, it seems that the decision to sell has been taken.
Cheap money
During the election campaign leading up to the September general election of 2007, the talk was that cheap money was out there and when the new government was formed, all effort would be made to rope in some of that cheap money to help with our business. Having 20 per cent of Air Jamaica is like having a few million dollars in the bank and then to withdraw, leaving $20 just for the sake of saying my account is not closed.
Wishful thinking is not something that a country or any business can thrive on. As difficult as it may be, we simply cannot do away with the national airline because it is in debt.
Let us keep Air Jamaica!
I am, etc.,
